Subspecies of giraffes

Kordofan giraffe

Found in southern Chad, the Central African Republic, northern Cameroon and northeastern Democratic Republic Congo. Has smaller spots than other giraffes.

Nubian giraffe

Found in eastern South Sudan, southwestern Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. Has brown spots surrounded by white lines.

West African giraffe

Found in southwestern niger. Lighter in color than other giraffes. The most endangered subspecies of giraffe.

Reticulated giraffe

Found in northeastern Kenya, southern Ethiopia and Somalia. Has large red and brown spots divided by white lines.

Angolan giraffe

Found in northern Namibia, southwestern Zambia, western Zimbabwe and Botswana. Has long brown spots that cover its legs and most of its body.

South African giraffe

Found in southern Zimbabwe, southern Botswana, southwestern Mozambique and nothern South Africa. Has dark, round patches that cover most of its legs and body.

Masai giraffe

Found in Tanzania and Kenya. Has star-shaped blotches.

Thornicoft's giraffe

Found exclusively in the Luangwa Valley in Zambia. Has star-shaped spots that do not cover its legs.
